Keynote Speaker

Conservation Through Time:

A fireside chat on the past, present, and future of soil and water conservation.

Jane Hardisty

A 1974 graduate of Ball State University with a degree in Natural Resources, Geography, and Biology, Jane Hardisty has received numerous state and national honors, including several Ball State Distinguished Alumni Awards. In 2018, Jane was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash for her distinguished public service.

Jane retired in 2018 after a distinguished 43-year career with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). She served in multiple roles, including 17 years as Indiana State Conservationist, where she oversaw conservation programs and technical assistance that protected natural resources through voluntary efforts on private working lands.

Widely respected for her expertise in policy development and implementation, Jane served on numerous special assignments and advisory councils that produced positive national impacts. As the first female soil conservationist in Indiana, she paved the way for women pursuing careers in agriculture and conservation. Her leadership helped establish Indiana as a national model for effective conservation partnerships that deliver innovative, direct assistance to landowners.

Jane played a key role in elevating the understanding of soil as a living, life-giving resource. Working with NRCS agronomists, soil scientists, and other specialists, she helped advance soil health management systems that continue to influence conservation planning nationwide.
