Dive Into the Hive (Bee Workshop)

June 26th 10 AM - 3:30 PM

Bees play a vital role in our landscapes, gardens, farms, and natural areas. This workshop will explore both native bees and honey bees, highlighting their unique differences, life cycles, and the important roles they play in pollination. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how bee populations function, what challenges they face, and why supporting diverse pollinator communities strengthens local ecosystems and food production.

The workshop will include both classroom-style learning and hands-on experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to observe active honey bee hives up close (with appropriate safety precautions) and learn about hive structure, tools, and protective equipment. We will also discuss native bee species found in our area, including their nesting habits and preferred habitats.

In addition, attendees will learn practical, achievable steps to create or enhance bee habitat at home, whether in a backyard, garden, or larger property. Topics will include selecting native plants for continuous blooms, reducing pesticide impacts, and providing nesting resources. Participants will also build their own insect hotel to take home and support native solitary bees.

To help turn ideas into action, we will share information about local, state, and federal conservation programs and funding opportunities available to landowners interested in establishing or improving pollinator habitat. Representatives will provide guidance on how to apply and what types of projects may qualify.

Whether you are a homeowner, gardener, landowner, educator, or simply interested in learning more about pollinators, this workshop will provide practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and resources to help you make a meaningful impact for bees in your community.
